At the Emery Neuroscience Center, state of the art equipment by Cadwell Inc. is used to record digital and video analysis. All testing is performed by Registered Technologists affiliated with the American Society of Electroneurodiagnostic Technology. Below are some of the procedures performed:
Electroencephalogram
(EEG): This is a test to determine brain
function. Disc electrodes are attached to the patients head and chest. The
machine records how the brain and heart are working and at the same time
videos the patient for observation. An EEG is ordered for Stroke,
Syncope, Seizures, Memory Loss, Vertigo (dizziness), Headaches, Multiple
Sclerosis, Altered Mental Status, and Brain Death Determination.
Long Term Electroencephalogram (LTM/EEG):
This test is done to determine epilepsy and adjust anticonvulsant
medications if necessary. If a routine EEG, which is run for 20 minutes to
an hour does not clarify what the doctor is looking for, a Long Term EEG
with video may be ordered. The patient comes in early in the morning and
the test is run for an entire day. |

24 Hour Ambulatory Electroencephalogram
Monitoring (24 Hour EEG): EEG is recorded all day
and over night. This is to determine night time seizures, or difficult to
diagnose seizures versus syncope episodes. The
brain and heart are both monitored for 24 hours or more. The patient comes in early in the morning and the electrodes are put on. Instead of staying in the doctors office all day, the patient is allowed to leave carrying a small recorder box. The head is wrapped in order for the wires to stay in place, so the patient may want to bring a hat. The next morning the patient comes in, the monitor and electrodes are removed and the patient leaves. The technologist and Dr. Emery view the entire recording.
